  • The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off is coming April 14th and the brave souls who’ve stepped up to help raise money for the Canada Games Celebration Plaza are in full practice and fundraising mode.  You can help them out.

Carla MacLeod has dedicated her life to excellence in the arena of sports… the hockey arena in particular.  After an incredible run with Canada’s National Team, the Spruce Grove, Alberta native turned her attention to coaching.  She returned to the Olympic Games as coach for the Japanese Women’t Team at the Sochi Games in 2014.   Now MacLeod is head coach at The Edge School at Calgary, and she’ll head up Alberta’s Women’s Team at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

    My Story…

A six-year member of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team, Carla has skated her way atop the podium on different occasions. She won Olympic Gold Medals at the 2006 and 2010 Games and was crowned a World Champion in 2007.
Carla has pursued a career in coaching which has also brought some highlights along the way including coaching the Japanese Olympic Women’s Hockey Team in Sochi, Russia in 2014.
When the opportunity presented itself to be a part of the Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2017 it was an easy decision as the Canada Winter Games are a big part of Carla’s success. Although certain she won’t find the top of the podium in the ballroom, this opportunity is a way to give back not only to the Red Deer who will host the 2019 Canada Winter Games but also the next generation of Canadian athletes. Carla will prove that one can dance with two left feet.

CELEBRATING THE GOOD WORKS IN OUR COMMUNITY A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off (SCDO) is a community builder initiative that brings together the professional dance community, community leaders, the business community and many talented volunteers to build awareness and raise funds for the great works happening in our community. It's about Red Deer coming together to Share the Magic! It is a sold-out event! Over eight hundred people from all walks of life attend the event supporting their favourite dance couple and the chosen charity. By now the audience is hyped right up and eager to hit the dance floor so the evening closes with a public dance with the popular Calgary band Dr. Zeus and the Who!

  • As exciting as new buildings and facilities are, the 2019 Canada Games will owe its success to one thing more than anything else… volunteers.  It will take about 5,000 volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly.  It’s a massive effort the likes of which Red Deer has never seen.  But the Canada Games team is absolutely confident that the people of Central Alberta will come through.  In fact they wouldn’t have bid on the games if they weren’t sure the public would support them by volunteering.

While hundreds have already signed up in the months and years leading to the event… now is the time for everyone to fill those 5,000 critical jobs.

With 10 months to go before the games start, the 2019 Canada Winter Games has opened a Volunteer Centre for anyone interested to come, ask questions, become informed, and even sign up to help out.    The Volunteer Centre’s fist day is  Saturday, April 21.  There’s an open house from 10 am to 2 pm. CEO Scott Robinson fills us in.

  • For someone who spends his days shining the spotlight on others, it’s an uncomfortable feeling to step onto the “other” side of the camera.  But that’s exactly what rdnewsNOW, Big 105 and 106.7 The Drive News Director Troy Gillard did when he was asked to support the 2019 Canada Winter Games effort to build Celebration Plaza.  The fact that his support would require a vast amount of courage as he took on the task of Celebrity Dancer is all the more impressive!  Fortunately for Troy.. he had an amazing teacher in Olya Joseph of the Dando Dance Company in Calgary.. and he had a love for Elvis that was just waiting to come out!

Proceeds from the 2018 Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off will help build an incredible new park in downtown Red Deer.  The Canada Games Celebration Plaza will be headquarters for our entire community during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.  Then the park will anchor future events and become a permanent and critical fixture for community building events for decades to come!

Thanks to rdnewsNOW / Big 105 / 106.7 The Drive… for sharing Troy’s hidden talents with Central Alberta for Celebration Plaza!  Thank you for helping us develop a beautiful new asset for our downtown, our community, and our future.
