Council sets local policing priorities for next two years
After consulting with the community, City Council has set their policing priorities for the next two years. The priorities were formally adopted at today’s regular Council meeting and will be implemented by the Red Deer RCMP.
“Over the past year, we heard from citizens through several public participation sessions on the topic of crime and community safety, and the information provided by Red Deerians is reflected in the updated policing priorities set by Council,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Over the next two years, Red Deer RCMP will prioritize reducing property and drug related crimes, enhancing public safety, and improving community relations between police and citizens. Public safety remains Council’s top priority and will continue to until we see results across our community.”
The updated policing priorities for 2020-2022 are:
o Crime Reduction – Property and Drugs
o Public Safety – Dynamic Enforcement
o Community Relations – Responsive and Visible
Within each priority area, objectives and goals have been set, which will be measured and reported on over the next two years.
“Reducing crime and improving community safety continues to be a top priority for The City, and we will continue to partner with the RCMP to make improvements in these areas, which is reflected in the Red Deer Policing Plan,” said Ken McMullen, Deputy General Manager of Development and Protective Services.
Last winter, hundreds of citizens participated in the “Better Together” public participation sessions, both in person and online, on the topic of improving community safety and reducing crime. The City also conducted a statistically valid telephone survey on the topic of policing this past February. Results from the Better Together initiative are online at www.bettertogether.reddeer.ca.
