New logo sculpture celebrates Red Deer Polytechnic’s brand

Collaborative efforts showcase CIM-TAC’s capabilities

An idea that started several months ago has been brought to fruition at Red Deer Polytechnic. A logo sculpture has been installed on the Polytechnic’s main campus to provide a creative visual representation that encourages on-campus engagement.

“The unique logo sculpture raises awareness about our polytechnic brand and provides opportunities for individuals to take photographs, demonstrating their pride and connection to our institution,” says Richard Longtin, Vice President, External Relations. “Along with current students and employees, we welcome alumni and donors to visit this sculpture on campus and to share their experiences on social media, as they play key roles as ambassadors for Red Deer Polytechnic in the surrounding communities.”

The sculpture, which is located near the institution’s main entrance, was built in the Polytechnic’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing (CIM-TAC) from 11 gauge, four by six-inch tubular carbon steel. After the curved sections were cut from steel plate using a waterjet machine, they were welded together and polished. The final piece was powder coated in Red Deer Polytechnic’s lime green by Metalstrip and Coatings Inc., a local supplier.

“The creation and installation of this project was truly a collaborative effort that involved students, faculty, staff, and community business partners,” says Dr. Tonya Wolfe, Director of the Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation. “It also showcases how the CIM-TAC uses advanced manufacturing technologies to enhance current practices and improve outcomes.”

CIM-TAC staff designed and performed the engineering work on the RDP logo sculpture and collaborated with the Polytechnic’s Campus Management to determine the most effective manner of installation. Before construction began, CIM-TAC student interns from the Bachelor of Engineering transfer program visualized how the project would look on-site using augmented reality goggles. This process allowed them to evaluate if design adjustments would be required.

Many central Albertans and stakeholders are still learning about the diverse benefits of the institution becoming Red Deer Polytechnic and this sculpture helps to increase that awareness.

“When the brand of our institution changed this past October, it signaled a new chapter for Red Deer Polytechnic. With increased programming options, including apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas, micro-credentials, and more of our own degrees, we are a destination for learners from central Alberta, the province, and across Canada,” says Stuart Cullum, President of Red Deer Polytechnic. “With a focus on the needs of central Alberta industry and the economic, social and cultural priorities of  the province, we are positioned to provide more career relevant education and training as a premier polytechnic institution.”

About the Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing (CIM-TAC): While its Technology Access Centre designation was awarded in 2020, the CIM opened in 2009 as one of the key facilities of RDP’s Four Centres. Since then, they have collaborated with hundreds of small and medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs to create solutions to numerous real-world manufacturing challenges.

Rebate programs launch again in Red Deer

Red Deer residents who purchase and install a rain barrel, drought-tolerant plants, permeable mulch or a low-flow toilet may qualify for a rebate on their City utility bill.

Alberta is experiencing drought in many parts of the province due to a below average snowpack in winter 2022-23, these rebate programs help Red Deerians conserve water usage in their homes and on their property at a time when water conservation is top of mind for many. The province is currently in water shortage management stage 4 (out of 5) and multiple water management areas are impacted by water shortage.

Participants in the programs could see a reduction in water usage in their homes as well as time and money as yards and gardens require less watering and fertilizer.

Specific details vary per rebate, but each program is open to Red Deer residents who have a City of Red Deer utility account.

Plant and Mulch Rebates are open for qualifying residents who purchase and install qualifying plants and/or permeable mulch in 2024. There is one rebate available for 50% of the cost of plants up to $50 and one rebate available for 50% of the cost of mulch up to $50.

The Rain Barrel Rebate program is open for residents who purchase and install a new rain barrel in 2024. The rebate is for 50% of the cost of the rain barrel up to $50. To encourage residents to participate in the program, this rebate has been expanded for 2024. Participants who received one rain barrel rebate in past years are welcome to apply for one additional rebate. Maximum of two rebates per utility account for the lifetime of that utility account.

Toilet Rebate is available for residents who replace a high-flow toilet with a low-flow model. Two $25 rebates are available per utility account. People who have participated in this program in previous years are not eligible to receive another rebate.

These rebate programs support the water-related goals in The City’s Environmental Master Plan by reducing Red Deerians water use and increasing water conservation efforts. More information on how you can conserve water can be found at reddeer.ca/drought.

Support a young reader through the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign

Smile Cookies are coming to a Tim Hortons near you!

We know you missed those delicious chocolate chip cookies with the big blue eyes and bright pink smiles! And we are so thankful Tim Hortons is bringing its Smile Cookie campaign back next week!

Helping struggling students become readers of potential is exactly what local Tim Hortons stores want as proceeds for its Smile Cookie campaign, which runs April 29 – May 5, will be directed to Reading College, a project of the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools.

“We set up this amazing and fun summer program for kids in Grade 2 where they learn to love reading, and gain the skills to continue their growth as learners. Reading is the foundation for success in school and life. If we can help further develop their skills and instill a love for reading, it creates a lifetime of difference for that child. It will make a difference for them, make a difference for their families and make a difference in their life experiences. That’s the beauty of Reading College,” said Superintendent of Schools, Chad Erickson. “Last year, we had 67 graduates of the Reading College program who were incredibly engaged and able to excel and improve their reading abilities over the month of July, setting them up for further success.”

“The Smile Cookie Campaign is a great opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of literacy. It really does create life chances for students. Reading College is made possible through great support from our community and Tim Hortons – we could not operate it without this support,” said Kristine Plastow, Foundation Board Chair. “I encourage the community to get out there and buy their cookies next week!”

From April 29 – May 5, Tim Hortons restaurant owners in Red Deer will generously donate proceeds from sales of a special smiling chocolate chunk cookie to support the Reading College program through The Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools. The $1.50 treat helps community programs across Canada in the cities where they are sold. This year, 10% of funds raised from Smile Cookies will support the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps, of which more than 100 students from Red Deer Public Schools will attend.

“We invite the community to join us for our Smile Cookie Day on May 4 at the Tim Hortons on Thomlison Avenue in Red Deer,” said Plastow. “We have partnered with the Red Deer RCMP, Emergency Services and the Alberta Sheriffs. Come and sit in a firetruck or police car, meet local emergency responders and buy a delicious Smile Cookie, while supporting a great cause!”
