Why I do not support the status quo.
While Alberta’s, Edmonton’s, Calgary’s, Lethbridge’s, Blackfald’s, Penhold’s and Sylvan Lake’s population increased Red Deer’s population decreased last year.
Another or 2nd reason is the inequality of distribution of recreational facilities.
North of the river where 30% of the population lives they have just the 1 recreational facility, the Dawe Centre initially constructed in the 1970s and there are no plans to build another.
While south of the river there are 10 recreational facilities ; the Downtown Recreation Centre, Michener Aquatic Centre, Downtown Arena, Centrium complex, Collicutt Recreation Centre, Pidherney Curling Centre, Kinex Arena, Kinsmen Community Arenas, Red Deer Curling Centre, and the under-construction Gary W. Harris Centre. The city is also talking about replacing the downtown recreation centre with an expanded 50m pool.
The third reason I do not support the status quo is the distribution of high schools. There no high schools north of the river and there are no plans for any high schools north of the river. There are 4 high schools now south of the river, and 2 more in planning for the south side of the river with 5 high schools along 30 Ave.
The 4th reason I cannot support the status quo is our air quality. We have the poorest air quality in Alberta and Alberta has the poorest air quality in Canada.
The 5th reason I cannot support the status quo is that our crime rate severity is only 2nd to Grande Prairie across Canada.
The 6th reason I cannot support the status quo is that even with declining population our city hall is expanding and our taxes are increasing.
The 7th reason I cannot just support the status quo is even after spending hundreds of millions of dollars downtown, demolishing and building the public works, re-aligning roads, upgrading and burying services, building the Sorenson station, developing for the Riverlands, they are planning on spending hundreds of millions more on demolishing/renovating the downtown rec centre, parking, streets, building/renovating a concert hall/ community hall, a new footbridge over the river to Bower Ponds, etc.
The 8th reason I cannot support the status quo is the arrogant abandonment of the economic potential for Hazlett Lake. A 100 acre lake with 2 miles of shore could have been a highly visible tourist attraction but instead will be buried in a residential development without a thought of it’s growth potential.
There are other smaller reasons but I think 8 is enough to question why the candidates would appear to just simply accept the status quo.
I can understand the incumbents saying everything is fine, carry on but not the challengers.
I understand that people do not want to hear criticism and complaints, but we cannot ignore issues because it makes one look like a complainer. The facts are there, reports have been aired so I guess I will be just a complainer, knowing that I tried. I cannot and will not sit idly by simply accepting the status-quo. Thank you.
