Have some fun “re-casting” movies with REPODCASTING

  • It’s tough to come up with a more succinct description of Repodcasting than that contained in its impossibly catchy theme song:

Have you ever watched a movie and wondered why,

They cast that woman, or that guy?

Well, here’s our chance to give it a try,

    We’re Repodcasting.

The show is hosted by two cousins: Lucia Juliao, who lives in Calgary, and Janet Debrito, who lives in Toronto. Every month, they pick a movie that just didn’t seem to have the right people on screen, and suggest some better choices.

As an added twist, they also find a role for Tony Danza in every film the consider. Why not? As Juliao says, it’s fun and silly, and a wonderful way to pass the time. They’ve known each other their whole lives, so their chemistry is great — no need to recast this podcast!

Let’s learn a little more about the Calgary cousin behind Repodcasting:

What is your podcast about and why did you choose that topic?

    A. We recast famous movies with our dream casts. We wanted to do this because it is fun, and because there are many movies with bad casting.

What podcasts do you listen to and why?

    A. R U Talkin’ REM Re: Me?, Threedom, Comedy Bang! Bang!, This American Life. They are super funny or have great storytelling.

Why do you think people enjoy podcasts?

    A. Podcasts are an interesting medium in that they’re not highly regulated. Anyone can start a podcast about whatever they want (pretty much). I love listening to them while driving, doing laundry, cooking, etc. You can listen to them while you do other (often tedious) things.

    Q. Do you have any unusual hobbies or talents that may surprise your listeners?

I can sing every word to Yakko’s World.

If you could have any guest on your show, who would you ask and why?

    A. Ryan Gosling because he’s a nice, Canadian boy.

What has been your favourite episode so far and why?

    A. My favourite episode is 3: The Girl on the Train, (click link to listen) because it is so fun to listen to.

  • Say you want the book-club experience without the pressure of reading a whole book on deadline, and without the hassle of gathering in someone’s living room. What do you do?

You subscribe to The Read-Along, that’s what. You’ll find yourself on “a journey through a good book, one chapter at a time,” with the husband-and-wife team of Anita and Scott C. Bourgeois.

Each episode is based on a chapter, so you only have to read a little bit at a time. The hosts don’t read ahead, so you don’t have to worry about spoilers, as long as you read the chapter before listening to the episode. They are also skilled in banter and approach the podcast with joy, so the journey is a lot of fun.

They are currently in the middle of Jasmine Gower’s Moonshine, a fantasy novel set in a world similar to 1920’s Chicago, but with magic. You can join them on this book, or look back at their previous titles, and proceed at your own pace — that’s the beauty of the podcast!

Let’s learn a little more about the bookworms behind the show:

    Q. What will people get out of listening to your podcast?

    A. A low-commitment book club, motivation to read, story and character analysis, and a little humour.

    Q. If you could have any guest on your show, who would you want and why?

    A. We’ve discussed trying to get one of our featured authors on the show.

    Q. Do you have any unusual hobbies or talents that would surprise your listeners?

    A. Podcasting! We’re also big nerds who love tabletop games.

    Q. What podcasts do you listen to?

    A. Ken & Robin Talk About Stuff, The Greatest Generation: DS9, The Undad, Modern Manhood, I Have Some Notes, Press Start to Join, The Bugle and Lore are all regulars, but lots of other podcasts as well.

Q.Write your own epitaph — what would it say?

    A. They came. They read. They talked about it.

    Q. What has been your favourite episode and why?

    A. Episode 62, “Murder Arithmetic.” We go Full Book Club on The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz in our final overview of the book, after the weekly chapter-by-chapter read-through. Lots of great discussion.

Indulge your nerdiness with Press Start to Join

  • Just how geeky are the hosts of Press Start to Join, the show that promises “more geekery than you can shake a joystick at”?

Well, for one thing, Josh Shenfield and Alan Techsmith started podcasting in 2015, way before podcasting hit the mainstream. For another, they never run out of things to nerd out about, whether it be video games, board games, tech security, comics, virtual reality or anything else in the geek universe.

In addition to their weekly show covering current events on those topics, they do a monthly deep dive into video game history, exploring the origins and evolution of various games, companies or franchises. Be sure to catch the first episode of every month, too, for a complete list of free video games you can download.

Let’s press start on this Q&A with the PS2J team:

    How did you meet?

    A. We went to high school together, bonded over shared geekery, and just never stopped talking about it.

Do you have any unusual hobbies or talents that would surprise your listeners?

    A. Alan has an eerie memory for useless numbers, and Josh is great at painting miniatures.

What podcasts do you listen to?

    A. Alan: My Brother, My Brother, and Me; Fandalites; The Adventure Zone; Hey Riddle Riddle; Swindled; Til Death Do Us Blart.

Josh: This Week in Tech; Star Wars Minute; How Did This Get Made; Podzilla1985; Lore; Stuff You Should Know; Comedy Bang Bang.

If you could have any guest on your show, who would you want and why?

    A. Josh: Cosplayer and YouTuber Jessica Nigri or animator Ross O’Donovan, because they both seem like they’d be a lot of fun to talk to.

Alan: Game designer Chris Perkins, because he’s led such an interesting life (and maybe we could convince him to Dungeon Master for us).

Write your own epitaph — what would it say and why?

    A. Here Lies Josh — He doubted he could do anything and ended up doing it all just fine.

RIP Alan — He knew just enough to be dangerous.

What has been your favourite episode so far?
    A. Always next one, because it’s going to be the best yet! (But, for the purposes of this question, here’s the history episode on Tetris.)
