Red Deer County Launches Safe Water Well Initiative

Red Deer County is hoping to protect local aquifers and it’s water supply by plugging old, unused and abandoned water wells. With that in mind, County officials say their Safe Water Well Initiative offers up to $1,000 per well is available for landowners to purchase bentonite and pay for hired driller costs up to $1,000 per well for the well to be plugged.

Red Deer County has 11,600 water wells on record plus an unknown number of wells that are off record. It’s estimated that 20% of these wells may need to be reclaimed.
