Steakhouse Evicts PETA’s Pro-Turkey Billboard

Moaning Restaurant’s Demands Won’t Keep ‘ThanksVegan’ out of Canada: Nationwide Ad Blitz Ahead

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, PETA placed a billboard near the Walmart store on Gaetz Avenue as part of its new ThanksVegan campaign—but the ad company is moving the nongraphic billboard after a complaint by the nearby MR MIKES SteakhouseCasual.

PETA’s ThanksVegan campaign aims to give everyone the resources that they need to celebrate the holiday with a healthy and humane vegan feast, and other similar billboards are already up in Edmonton, Lloydminster, and Lethbridge—without any complaints so far. Across Canada, Sobeys, Safeway, and other grocery stores are teaming up with PETA to showcase their ready-to-roast vegan turkeys and other animal-free offerings for the growing population of Canadians who are choosing vegan meals for the holiday and every day.

“Steakhouse owners may not want to face the facts, but when it comes to feeling pain and fear, loving their families, and valuing their own lives, turkeys are no different from human beings—and more and more people are recognizing that,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA hopes everyone will celebrate ThanksVegan this year with a delicious meal that keeps gentle birds off the table.”

Turkeys are caring parents and spirited explorers who can live up to 10 years, but those raised for food are normally slaughtered when they’re between 12 and 26 weeks old—and millions are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone. The young birds are hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath, and they’re often still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot defeathering tanks.

PETA’s billboard is located at 6701 Gaetz Ave.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a ThanksVegan recipe guide here. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

Downtown Business Spotlight: 4 Pillars

Published on

This week’s Business Spotlight shines on 4 Pillars! Located at 4779 49 St, 4 Pillars is the place to go to find debt relief. We sat down with the owner and Debt Relief Specialist, Eric Everett, for more information about the business!

What is your business?

Well, we help people through their debt problems, so we have debt relief solutions and financial advice on how to solve problems.

When did you open?

Well, 4 Pillars, across Canada, started in 2002, so 18 years and Red Deer started 7 years ago. I purchased July 1st of 2019.

What would you say makes your business unique?

I have to say great staff, or they’ll beat me up! What I love is that we don’t just help with debt. We have all kinds of different solutions to help people through whatever needs they have, so when they walk out they say, ‘Wow! That was easy!’

What are some products/services that you offer?

Our main job is to get people to do a Consumer Proposal. I call it bankruptcy-light. There are hardly any consequences, versus bankruptcy. It’s a very easy solution through their debt problems. And it’s not just that people have little debt problems; our average debt level is 60,000$, it’s hard to get out of that by themselves. The government came up with the Consumer Proposal about 20 years ago so that people can come out through their debt problems without committing suicide or robbing banks so that they can have some hope for their future. I’m actually a hope builder!

Why did you choose Downtown Red Deer as the location for your business?

Well, great visibility is the main reason. We have about 10,000 cars drive by our location every day, so that’s huge for us. And then Lucky Restaurant is right next door!

What do you think makes Downtown vibrant?

Lots of access, ease of getting around, everything is located in a small area, and it’s not hard to get in and out of the Downtown area like a lot of centers.

I love Downtown Red Deer because… It’s a good business location for me.

If you or someone you know is looking for assistance getting out of debt, 4 Pillars is the place to go.
