Check Out The Progress On Red Deer’s Canada Games Centre!

By Sheldon Spackman

Excitement is building around construction of the new Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at Red Deer College. Only one year away from completion, the $88 million dollar facility for Health, Wellness and Sport is going to be one of Red Deer’s most iconic structures. It will also host numerous events at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer in February of 2019 and house all of the athletes participating.

Officials describe it as a world-class building integrating education and learning, with sport and training. Once open, it will support students and programs primarily in RDC’s School of Health Sciences and help create other new academic programming opportunities related to health and wellness.

New sporting spaces like a Gymnasium, Arena, Squash Courts, Indoor Running Track and Dance Studios will also enhance development programs for players, coaches and trainers. New venues that will meet provincial, national and international sporting standards, attracting more such events to Red Deer.

The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre is slated to open in August of 2018.

Chefs de Mission Visit Red Deer

February 12, 2018

(Red Deer, Alberta) – Later this week, the Chefs de Mission and their assistants from Canada’s 13 provinces and territories will get a peek at the preparations underway for the 2019 Canada Winter Games as they attend the Mission Conference #1 in Red Deer.

“This is an important opportunity for the Chefs de Mission to visit the central Alberta region and check out the Games time amenities on behalf of their provincial or territorial team,” said Scott Robinson, CEO of the 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society. “During the Mission Conference #1, they will visit a number of venues that will be used during the Games and receive planning updates from the Host Society staff and Canada Games Council.”

The role of the Chefs de Mission is to coordinate their provincial or territorial team, which includes mission staff and the athletes. Their responsibilities go beyond the sport competitions to the overall organization of the Games in regards to logistical planning areas, including transportation, food services and athlete services. “The 2019 Canada Winter Games will bring together the best that Canada has to offer, from coast to coast to coast,” said David Patterson, Canada Games Council President and CEO. “This conference is the first chance of many to show the nation what Red Deer is capable of. We know that Red Deer is going to do a great job of showing the Chefs de Mission how they are going to make this a life changing experience for the 3,600 participants that will gather here one year from now.” For more details on the 2019 Canada Winter Games, please visit
