Charges Laid In Highland Green Shooting

RCMP have laid charges against a Red Deer man accused in a shooting incident in the Highland Green neighbourhood Tuesday morning. 31 year old Derek John Bergdal faces the following counts:

  • Criminal Code 244(a) – Discharge firearm with intent to wound
  • Criminal Code 344(1)(a) – Robbery using restricted or prohibited firearm
  • Criminal Code 87(1) – Pointing a firearm
  • Criminal Code 95 – Possess restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Criminal Code 117.01(1) – Possess firearm contrary to prohibition order
  • Criminal Code 180(1)(b) – Commit nuisance causing physical injury

Mounties say several people were taken into custody on January 31st after a disturbance at an apartment building in the area of 59 Avenue and 63 Street involving a firearm. Police say a fight between two men resulted in one man being shot and suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Bergdal remains in custody and is due in Red Deer court on February 2nd.
