Update: RCMP charge 3 youth with weapon possession after incident at Red Deer Middle School

Red Deer RCMP respond to threat at Eastview Middle School – Update Charges laid

Following an investigation into a threat at Eastview Middle School, RCMP have now laid charges against three youth.

On June 11, two of three suspects were apprehended by the RCMP and a third suspect was not immediately located.  On June 12 in the evening, the third youth involved cooperated with RCMP by turning himself in.

All three youths, aged 15, 16, 17, are facing charges of possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon under the criminal code, as well as disturb or interrupt proceedings of a school under the School Act.  The three are scheduled to appear in youth court on June 27, 2019 in Red Deer Provincial Court. 

No further information will be made available in relation to this incident.

On June 11, 2019, at approximately 3:22 p.m. Red Deer RCMP responded to a call at Eastview Middle School after three male youth entered the school with a possible firearm.  

Eastview Middle School, along with surrounding schools, were put into lockdown as a result. 

There were no injuries as a result of this incident.   

RCMP cleared the building and the suspects fled. Two of the three suspects have been apprehended and charged with firearms related offences. RCMP continue to search for the remaining suspect. 

A replica firearm was later located. 

RCMP continue to investigate this incident and are asking for the public’s assistance. Red Deer RCMP respond to shooting – Update #2 6:45 PM

Red Deer, Alta. – The vehicle connected to this morning’s shooting at Parkland Mall has been located in Calgary and was seized by Calgary Police Service. The suspects remain at large.16

Update Monday 3:41 PM

Red Deer RCMP respond to shooting – Update #1

Red Deer RCMP continue to search for the vehicle and suspects connected to this morning’s shooting at Parkland Mall.

RCMP believe this vehicle was stolen out of Blackfalds on June 25, and police would like to clarify that it is a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, white with black rims and tinted windows and tail lights. Another photo is attached.

The shooting appears to be targeted and was not random.

Red Deer RCMP respond to shooting

Red Deer, Alta. – At 11:32 a.m. this morning, Red Deer RCMP responded to a shooting that happened outside Parkland Mall.

One male was injured and was transported to hospital.

RCMP are looking for the suspects who are believed to be driving a stolen 2016 white Jeep Cherokee with black rims. Photo included. There appears to be three or four males in the vehicle.

If you see this vehicle you are asked to call 9-1-1.

Suspect arrested with loaded shotgun and meth in East Red Deer

Red Deer RCMP charge male with possession and firearms related charges

Early Thursday morning, Red Deer RCMP arrested and charged a male with numerous possession and firearms related charges.

Shortly after midnight on June 18, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted at the Easthill shopping complex after it had fled from police on June 17. When police arrived at the shopping complex, the male driver fled on foot. Police pursued on foot and apprehended the male who was found to be in possession of a loaded shotgun, ammunition and illicit drugs (methamphetamine and cocaine) for the purposes of trafficking. During the foot pursuit, one member of the Red Deer RCMP sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. The male suspect was not injured.

33 year old Kyle Harstad of Sylvan Lake is in custody and faces the following charges:

  • Two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of the proceeds of crime
  • Three firearms related charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • Three counts of breach of release
  • Two counts of resisting arrest
