Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off- Update to the Community

The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2017 Cabinet wishes to provide an update to Central Alberta on this year’s event. Following are thoughts from the different partners in this year’s dance off. To see the full news release CLICK HERE.

Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2017 (SCDO) Co-Chair Christine Moore shares; “From the SCDO inception, there has been a dream that more than one organization would work together, that we could bring more awareness to great causes, that we could all learn more about each other and work together. That’s the beauty of community. This year our dream came true!”
She adds; “We selected our two partners because of their strengths and shared vision. It’s a unique situation because we have 30 years of history, of hard work serving the community in the Central Alberta Sexual Support Assault Centre (CASASC) , combined with the vision of something better for Central Alberta in the Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC), both organizations embracing a shared vision to serve vulnerable children and families.

From a logistical side, it’s made our event bigger because we have the supporters of both organizations, and we have engaged another city, Calgary, with three of our Celebrity Dancers. They have brought a whole wealth of support, in fundraising and participation, and in building awareness for our causes. It has definitely raised the profile of our event! We’ve made many new friends in Calgary.”

On ticket sales, Christine says; ”For many good reasons we have gone from our usual cap of 800 tickets to seating over 1000 guests on the night and we have a waiting-list. We are of course very pleased to accommodate everyone and the fire chief has approved it all!”

CACAC CEO, Mark Jones, notes; “A dream for several Red Deer community members is coming to fruition. The CACAC and its member partners, Child and Family Services, Alberta Health Services, First Nations Tribes, RCMP and Alberta Justice are meeting and have already begun defining a Memorandum of Understanding on how we will work together to best serve abused children in Central Alberta.

Using the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre’s as our model for integrated services, and with the help of the SKCAC staff in Calgary, the Red Deer coalition has now given way to the first ever Board of Directors of CACAC.”

CASASC Executive Director Patricia Arango tells us;” Our agency’s 30 years of experience combined with our team of professionals made this partnership a perfect fit for our families. Teaming up with the SCDO 2017 brought significant awareness to both causes and it was a strong kick-start to our capital campaign. The outpouring of support from the community for the SCDO 2017 and into the future is beyond our wildest dreams!”

Moore reminds everyone; “Although we are sold out of tickets, there are many opportunities to support the Celebrity Dancers online (celebritydanceoff.ca). There are a few sponsorship opportunities available by calling Nadine George at 403.340.1124. We also have two great raffles, a luxury holiday on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and an Exclusive Luxury Golf Experience at Sherwood Country Club, California.”

The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2017 will take place on Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Sheraton Red Deer Hotel.

SCDO 2017 PARTNERSHIPS

The Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2017 (SCDO) is EXTREMELY excited to partner with Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC) and Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre (CASASC). Both groups are looking for a new home in Red Deer.

CACAC, new to our region, is offering a new integrated services approach for children experiencing violence and trauma. To learn more about this initiative, visit Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre on which the Central Alberta CAC will be modeled.

Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre has been serving our community for over 30 years and is desperately in need of more space to meet the needs of its clients.

It is truly an honour for the SCDO 2017 to partner with these two great agencies. Proceeds from the event will go towards a facility that will be home to both organizations.

The Friends of the Red Deer Regional Hospital play a critical role in patient comfort

There are a lot of moving parts (excuse the pun) in Red Deer’s annual Celebrity Dance Off. But in the end, Dance Off sets out to accomplish two goals with each performance. One is to raise funds for a much needed cause in our region. Two is to raise the profile of that same cause. In the long run, the second goal is probably more important. A higher profile can mean more ongoing support from volunteers and through donations.

In 2019 the Celebrity Dance Off partnered with the Friends of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Here’s what Dance Off Chair Christine Moore said when the partnership was announced.

“With roots going back to 1904, this group of dedicated volunteers have fundraised to support the care and comfort of patients at our hospital. Over the last 38 years, they have raised over $7 million. They exemplify everything about volunteerism and giving back to the community. They are the unsung heroes of our hospital.”

And this comes from the Friends website: “our mission is to facilitate innovative fundraising programs for equipment and services that benefit patient care and comfort in the Red Deer Regional Hospital…

Our fundraising dollars are geared to the purchase of medical furniture and fixtures, and to patient care and comfort up to a maximum of $4,999.00 per item. The Friends Centre assists with the provision of day-to-day supplies and comfort items. This includes personal grooming items, nursing supplies such as blood pressure monitors, blanket warmers and furniture for the units to share.”

Trevor Sopracolle went from watching the Celebrity Dance Off last year, to being front and centre this year! Trevor was the first “Oil Man” in the Celebrity Dance Off. Hopefully the first of many. He’s also one of the toughest looking Travolta’s you’ll ever see. Trevor and his pro partner Alex McPherson wrapped up the show with a brilliant choice of music from Grease. “Olivia” was amazing.. and “John” turned the world upside down. See for yourself. ..

My Story…

I was born in Goodsoil, Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta when I was in grade 3 and spent most of my youth in Consort.

I lost my Dad to cancer when I was in high school and so I grew up fast. At 17 I secured a loan for a 2-bedroom house with a dirt floor basement. To make ends meet, I worked as a tire technician at the local tire shop while attending high school. One of the only benefits of owning your own place in high school is having the coolest parties after the high school dances!

I moved to Red Deer in 1999 at the age of 19 and began working at Fountain Tire. Not long later a local snubbing company hired me. Over a 10-year period I worked my way up becoming a senior supervisor overseeing most of the higher-class pressure jobs and many overseas projects. In 2008, Garrett Radchenko and I started Goliath Snubbing Ltd., and we haven’t looked back.

I have also been blessed with the best kids a Dad could ask for. Being a single Dad with three kids under 8 definitely keeps me busy.
