Results Released from Living Wage Study In Red Deer
By Sheldon Spackman
A local organization dedicated to reducing poverty throughout Central Alberta has released it’s findings on what a Living Wage would be in Red Deer.
The Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance or CAPRA began it’s research into the question back in 2012 and through numerous community discussions, developed a report in 2014 and an update in 2016 on what the Living Wage is currently at in Red Deer.
The report finds that each parent in a two-child household in our city needs to make at least $13.81 an hour to help meet the family’s basic needs, like food, shelter, clothing, transportation, child care, health care, recreation, entertainment and savings. That’s up from $13.11 an hour for each parent in a two-child household in 2014.
Other Living Wage results throughout the region include Blackfalds at $19.43/hr for each parent, $16.37 in Bowden, $15.41 in Eckville, $17.20 in Innisfail, $17.42 in Lacombe, $16.62 in Penhold, $17.59 in Ponoka, $20.25 in Rimbey and $18.48 in Sylvan Lake.
