The Canada Games torch has been passed to Red Deer, Alberta, the host of the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

On Sunday, August 13, during the Closing Ceremony of the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, City of Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer received the Canada Games flag from Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and Canada Games Chairman Tom Quinn. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston declared the 2017 Games closed as Reece Lehman of Red Deer carried the Canada Games torch out of the stadium.

From February 15 until March 3, 2019, Red Deer, Alberta will welcome the nation for the 27th edition of the Canada Games.

“As the host of the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games, the people of Manitoba came together to deliver an inspiring event that allowed for the athletes to reach their personal bests,” said Lyn Radford, Chair of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. “In order to deliver a life-shaping Canada Games experience, we will be working with our incredible business and volunteer community to ensure we are ready to take the national stage in 2019. While we have a lot of work to do over the next 18 months, the next chapter of Canada Games history begins in Red Deer.”

“It was an incredibly proud moment to receive the Canada Games flag in the presence of our fellow Canadians and bring it home,” said City of Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer. “The Winnipeg Games experience strongly demonstrated that sport building is community building and community building is country building. Now that the torch has literally and figuratively been passed, our community preparations will elevate over the next 18 months.”

“It is my pleasure to be a sponsor of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. From the start, our mission has been to contribute back to our central Alberta community focusing on initiatives that involves our children and youth. The goal for the winter games was to reach as many children as possible and ensure they had the opportunity to attend the Games live and experience sports. I feel sports and physical activity at a young age helps develop discipline, great work ethic, teamwork, and develops neuromuscular development. When children recognize the benefits of sports and start participating in any capacity this helps build a stronger community. Sports bring families, friends and the community together. We are so fortunate to be the hosts of the 2019 Canada Winter Games and plan to make it the most successful games thus far,” said Dr. Cheba, Owner, Red Deer Orthodontics.
