Pew: U.S. immigrant population declines for first time in nearly 60 years

The U.S.’s foreign-born population shrunk this year for the first time since the 1960s, new data released Thursday from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found.

After rapidly growing for more than 50 years, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. reached a record high of 53.3 million in January 2025. The following months showed a decline of nearly 1.5 million, a likely mark of President Donald Trump’s second-term immigration policies.

The new Pew study shows that more people are leaving the U.S. than are entering it, the first time this has happened in more than half a century.

The analysis also found that the number of noncitizens in the U.S. illegally reached a record high of 14 million in 2023, a trend which Trump routinely drew on while campaigning against his opponents in the 2024 presidential race, first former President Joe Biden and then former Vice President Kamala Harris.

A nationwide crackdown on immigration has been a central part of Trump’s second-term policy agenda. He has signed 181 executive orders relating to immigration since returning to the White House in January. The administration has implemented its immigration policies through mass deportations of noncitizens, incentivizing self deportations, heightened security at the U.S.’s southwestern border and by toughening up student visa requirements.

These policies were reflected in Pew’s data, which found that the percent of the U.S. population made up of immigrants shrunk to 15.4% in June from 15.8% in January.

Immigrants, both lawful and unlawful, make up a sizable portion of the U.S. workforce. Pew’s report shows that the U.S. lost more than 750,000 workers since January with the percent of immigrants in the workforce declining from 20% to 19% in six months.

Economists say the strain a declining workforce will have on the U.S. economy is contingent on the scope of Trump’s immigration policies during the latter half of his second term. If current trends continue, the U.S. is likely to face economic challenges stemming from the significant decline in workers.

Three dead in Florida after reckless U-turn by illegal immigrant with California commercial license

Quick Hit:

The White House says California’s sanctuary state policies are to blame for last week’s Florida Turnpike crash that left three Americans dead. The truck driver, an illegal alien carrying a California-issued commercial license, made a reckless U-turn that ended in tragedy.

Key Details:

  • The driver, an Indian national in the U.S. illegally, carried a California commercial license — which the White House said “put the lives of American citizens at risk every single day.”
  • Governor Gavin Newsom refused to back down, insisting that licenses for illegals “improve public safety.” The White House called that defense “callous” and “reckless.”
  • Homeland Security vowed to hold the driver accountable, declaring: “We pray for the victims and their families. Secretary Noem and DHS are working around the clock to protect the public and get these criminal illegal aliens out of America.”

Diving Deeper:

Three lives were lost on the Florida Turnpike when an illegal alien truck driver made an outrageous U-turn across the highway. But according to the White House, the wreck goes beyond one man’s reckless decision — it traces directly back to California’s sanctuary state policies.

The driver, an Indian national who entered the country illegally, carried a commercial driver’s license issued by California under rules signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. The White House didn’t hold back: “The illegal alien is an Indian national who was granted a commercial driver’s license by the so-called ‘sanctuary state’ of California, whose reckless policies put the lives of American citizens at risk every single day.”

Rather than express regret, Newsom doubled down. He defended the licensing of illegal aliens as a policy that “improves public safety.” The administration blasted that claim, saying California’s priorities put ideology above lives — and in this case, left three Florida families grieving.

Homeland Security made clear that the Trump administration will not allow the driver to slip through the cracks. “How many more innocent people have to die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the American public?” the statement asked. “We pray for the victims and their families. Secretary Noem and DHS are working around the clock to protect the public and get these criminal illegal aliens out of America.”

The crash itself — a truck blocking every lane as a minivan plowed helplessly into the trailer — was horrific enough. But for the White House, the greater outrage is that California handed a license to someone who never should have been behind the wheel in the first place.

Mexico Hands Over Notorious Cartel Leaders To Trump Admin

The Trump administration extradited dozens of fugitives from Mexico as the White House tightens a noose around criminal syndicates south of the border.

Federal law enforcement took custody of 26 individuals, many of them leaders of dangerous drug cartels and human smuggling organizations that the Trump administration has deemed to be foreign terrorist organizations, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The Tuesday announcement came in the aftermath of President Donald Trump reportedly authorizing the use of military force against drug cartels.

Among those handed over to U.S. authorities were top leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generation and Los Zetas cartels, according to the DOJ. Nearly every individual faces up to life in prison on various charges ranging from hostage-taking, drug-trafficking, kidnapping, human smuggling and a slate of other crimes.

“Today is the latest example of the Trump administration’s historic efforts to dismantle cartels and foreign terrorist organizations,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a public statement. “These 26 men have all played a role in bringing violence and drugs to American shores — under this Department of Justice, they will face severe consequences for their crimes against this country.”

“We are grateful to Mexico’s National Security team for their collaboration in this matter,” Bondi continued.

Those extradited to the U.S. included Martin Zazueta Perez and Kevin Gil Acosta, leaders of a powerful faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that have led hired gunmen armed with grenade launchers and assault rifles in attacks against Mexican military officials, according to the DOJ. Both men were involved in prolific fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.

Also taken into American custody were Leobardo Garcia Corrales, a close friend of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman who has allegedly trafficked fentanyl into the U.S. in exchange for AK-47s, grenades and submachine guns, and Luis Raul Castro Valenzuela, a Sinaloa Cartel gangbanger accused of kidnapping and holding hostage an American citizen, according to the DOJ.

Collectively, the 26 individuals have imported “tonnage quantities” of cocaine, meth, fentanyl heroin and other illicit drugs through the Mexico border, according to the Trump administration.

Just days before the extradition, Trump reportedly authorized the use of military strikes against Mexican drug cartels, a move that would mark a monumental escalation in the White House’s war against criminal syndicates. Immediately upon re-entering office, the president officially designated a number of cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, allowing U.S. authorization to freeze their financial assets, prohibit their entry into the country and the prosecution of members for supporting terrorism.

While the Mexican government has shown a willingness to help take on drug cartels and illegal immigration, their government appears adamantly opposed to U.S. military strikes against criminal syndicates within their territory, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Friday “absolutely” ruling out the possibility of U.S. military operations on Mexican land.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration across the southern border has wielded unprecedented success, with Border Patrol agents releasing zero migrants into the interior of the country in July, marking the third consecutive month of zero releases.
