  • On Wednesday June 6th . please take time from your busy lives and visit the grave of a Veteran.

Perhaps this would be the grave of a relative who served in the military, including the RCMP and Emergency Responders,

Should that grave not be near to you, consider a visit to any cemetery and reflect upon the life of a Veteran buried there.

In Red Deer, over the past week, flags have been placed at Veterans’ graves at both the Red Deer Cemetery and at Alto Reste Cemetery. The Legion Branch #35 Ladies Auxiliary is taking this opportunity to hold a short ceremony at the Red Deer Cemetery at 1:45p.m. Subsequent to the ceremony, flags and poppies will be available to be placed on the Veterans’ graves or cremation sites that may have been missed.

Please join us in honouring our Veterans, who, after serving our Country in many wars and conflicts have passed away.

    We will remember them.

  • From Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools

St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School celebrated literacy this week (March 18-22) to build community through reading, writing, fine arts and special guests. This special week is celebrated annually to remind students about the importance of literacy.
“Along with our faith, literacy is the foundation of everything else we do. This week we have been promoting literacy in a more community-minded way. Students from Grade 6-9 have been invited to interact through a variety of activities throughout the school during classes and at lunch. Nine guest readers have been brought in to read to each of the classes, as well as an author to do writers workshops with our keen and budding authors. Other activities included graffiti, book art, word games and book donations all culminating with a Pajama and Flashlight Day,” Assistant-Principal, Leo Chauvet at St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School.
“Literacy week has affected me because it taught me how to be a better author in the Writer’s Workshop and also showed me some ways that I can use old books for different crafts in Recycled Book Art,” said Grade 8 student Janelle Constantino at St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School.

Million-dollar SET FOR LIFE win in Red Deer!

Alice Bilinski was sure her eyes were playing a trick on her after she uncovered three SET FOR LIFE symbols on her $5 SET FOR LIFE ticket and won $1 million.

“I had a really hard time believing that I won,” she said. “It didn’t feel real to me. I felt like I was walking around in a fog for days after scratching my ticket.”

Although it took a little time to get used to the idea of winning the lottery, Bilinski said she has come up with a few ideas for her winnings.

“I have a couple of vacations in mind,” she said. “I have always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby, and to see Greece. So I’ll definitely be taking a couple of awesome vacations soon.”

The winner also plans to share her windfall with a very special person.

“It’s important to me that I share of the money with my daughter,” she said. “I’m going to pay off her student loans – that’s something I’ve always wished I could do for her.”

Bilinski purchased her winning SET FOR LIFE ticket at Shefield & Sons, located at 283-4747 67 Street in Red Deer.
