Sam Bergeron Understands your Struggles

Published

3 minute read

Always being vocal about politics and political based ideas, I have decided to get involved. As a career stylist, I have listened to the stories of thousands of people from Red Deer and its surrounding areas.
I would like to stand for something a little different in this election cycle and run on the premise of representing those who struggle and find it hard to make ends meet here in the city. When I moved to Red Deer in 2002, I secured a job at the locally grown Chatters hair salon in Parkland Mall. Being a single parent until 2011, I struggled to save on top of paying rent, bills and daycare. Low-income housing here seems to be in short supply. Regardless, I made $6 too much a year to qualify, so I worked 12hrs a day sometimes instead of the usual 8, and took less and less days off. If I fell ill, my style of job doesn’t stay paying, so bills can add quickly. I understand what it is like to need more, and want more. Luckily, I am a success story.

Raising children here can be daunting with the amount of consistent crime. A local police force hybrid model, including the RCMP, could really aid the citizens with the flourishing crime in the region.
I also propose we start from the ground up. Plant more food trees, build homes for the homeless, fund more low-income housing with percentage based rent structures, and regulate these things so they are not taken advantage of and wasted.
A more even distribution of our resources would also be in my path, as the north end feels like the city has abandoned them. We’d like to see more ball diamonds, an Olympic sized swimming pool, a new hospital and a new public high school. The reasoning of the population dwindling, as to why we don’t invest in the north is ridiculous. If you build it they will come.

To be the spokesperson for a city with the hardest working people in all of Canada, takes a strength and perseverance that I was born with and had enhanced by the wonderful people of this community. To illuminate and help solve the issues surrounding crime, tax spending, inclusivity, and accessibility for all, is my prime directive. In the last year, I acquired the wonderful job of teaching downtown. The thriving bustling core of our city is riddled with wins and losses for businesses. My students loved how I handled all situations with fairness and logic. They have encouraged me to bring that reality based way of thinking, into the world of politics.

I have listened Red Deer. Let me be your voice.
