Red Deer Vigil Honours Quebec Shooting Victims – Update With Images Of Central Albertans Supporting Our Muslim Community
Hundreds of Central Albertans from a variety of cultures and faiths turned out on a chilly late afternoon for a candlelight vigil in honour of the victims of Sunday’s terrorist attack in Quebec.
Organized by the Red Deer Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Network, local politicians and religious figures addressed the impressive crowd offering support to the Islamic community, and standing up against terrorism.
Todayville spoke to a number of participants, including the Imam of the Red Deer Islamic Centre.
Not all the statements were made by the invited speakers. Some in the crowd wanted to share their thoughts, bringing signs to reveal their thoughts and support to the huge crowd.
Others took the opportunity to make a statement to the next generation of Canadians. Several parents brought their children.
A terrorist attack against on Canadian soil was a brutal shock to the Muslim community. There is some relief though in the number of non-Muslims who came to share their condolences and offer support. The vigil may go a long way to helping heal the huge emotional wounds opened in Quebec City this week.
Community activist Halima Ali of the Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association says she’s rattled by the attack, but her faith in Canada and in Canadians remains.
