Have You Heard The Good News?
By Sheldon Spackman
Some good news for Central Albertans with hearing aids. The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Hearing Loops Canada to open the City’s first boardroom equipped with the Hearing Loops System, a system that allows those with hearing aids to hear the desired sound directly in the ear without any ambient noise.
Duane Melchert of X-Cel Communications in Red Deer is a certified installer of the system and says if a T-Coil is located in the hearing aid, a switch or button or remote control can simply activate the Hearing Loop system for the user. He says it’s affordable, easy to use and can be activated in most hearing aids. Melchert also points out that it takes little to no battery power and can be used everywhere you go.
He says the system is already starting to make in-roads in Central Alberta. It’s now installed as a Pilot Project in the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce Boardroom, at X-Cel Communications in Red Deer and the Innisfail Theatre. The Hearing Loops System is also installed at a few places in Edmonton, including Roger’s Place and starting to take hold in a couple of places in Yellowknife, North West Territories as well.
Melchert hopes to one day have it as Federal Legislation to have Hearing Loops Systems installed in all Public Places in Canada. He says it has a significant positive impact on the quality of life for those living with hearing aids.
Chamber officials feel this is a tremendous opportunity to fill a void in an under serviced population.
