Red Deer Regional Airport Ready For Take-Off!
By Sheldon Spackman
It just might be the most exciting news to land in The Red Deer Regional Airport in years! The Red Deer Regional Airport has a longer runway and that will make a huge difference in the type of planes and airlines which can now land in Red Deer.
Airport CEO Graham Ingham says the recent completion of the Runway extension was the largest Capital Project ever undertaken at the airport and positions the facility well for future growth. He points out activity at YQF currently results in about $100 million dollars of economic spin-off in the region, making it a key part of the local economy.
After a slow start to 2017, Ingham says April was a strong month for them. There have been increases in Charter traffic to Fort St. John and Grande Prairie and an increase in Air Canada traffic as well. Adding that meetings with two potential ultra-low-cost carriers last November, could also lead to further growth going forward.
Ingham says they are also working on a Land Development Strategy to hopefully capitalize on the economic opportunities that provides them. He says that would be part of step 2 in their Strategic Business Plan. Step 1 being the recent Runway Extension, with a Terminal expansion, Apron expansion and Parking Lot expansion also part of that Strategic Business Plan.
An official Grand Opening of the Runway Extension at the Red Deer Regional Airport will take place on Friday, May 12th at 11:00 am.
