Composting Program Opens Registration

Just in time for gardening season, the city will take on 200 households to begin composting in their yards.
Participants in the initiative will be given a free compost bin, aerating tool and kitchen catcher, plus training and ongoing support on how to compost.
In a release, Lauren Maris, Environmental Program Specialist, says, “We hear from residents that they are interested in composting, but don’t know how to start,” Maris adds, “We have eliminated the barriers to backyard composting by offering the tools and providing the expertise. We teach participants how to compost properly, so smells or pests aren’t a problem.”
Since the program began five years ago, more than a thousand households have been committed to composting with a goal in reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill.
