Council Trimming 2017 Operating Budget
By Sheldon Spackman
It’s day three of Operating Budget discussions over at Red Deer City Hall on Thursday. After a day of mostly Department Head presentations on Tuesday, Council began to trim and crunch the numbers on Wednesday.
City Manager Craig Curtis says a couple of items related to subdivision and licensing fees were trimmed on Wednesday, totaling $220,000. Another one-time funding item of money for growth planning was also reduced from $150,000 to $75,000. While a couple of other items regarding amenities and growth contributions, along with late night transit service reinstatement were suspended for discussion a little later in the Budget process.
These moves now bring the City’s 2017 Property Tax Rate increase to 2.28 percent. Operating Budget discussions continue today through January 13th and on January 16th, 17th and 18th if needed.
