Trustees with the Red Deer Catholic Regional School Division are respectfully disagreeing with their Red Deer Public counterparts regarding a single, publicly funded education system for Alberta. The Red Deer Public Board recently voted 4-3 in favour of the idea and will advocate for such a change with the government going forward. However, Red Deer Catholic trustees feel the system as it is now, is working just fine, so why change it?
The Alberta Government has shared this statement with us from Minister of Education David Eggen:
“Alberta’s education system allows parents to choose the school they feel will best ensure their child’s success. The basic funding model that allows for that choice has not changed since our government was elected. Our focus is on making life better for families by improving education for our children. That’s why we work closely with all school boards—including Alberta’s Catholic boards—to build new schools, invest in classroom resources, and reduce fees for parents.”
We spoke with Red Deer Catholic Regional School Board Chair Guy Pelletier to share their perspective on the subject.
