Man Dies In Explosion Near Red Deer

Published

By Sheldon Spackman

A 35 year old man is dead after an explosion in the Burnt Lake Industrial Park west of Red Deer Thursday afternoon.

Blackfalds RCMP say a Tanker Trailer exploded around 1:40pm at J Moore Enterprises but no one else was injured in the blast.

Mounties say the tanker was completely destroyed but the explosion caused minimal damage to surrounding buildings while scattering debris in a radius of roughly one block.

Red Deer County Fire and Traffic members attended to assist with diverting traffic while the scene was contained and to ensure the fire was extinguished.

However, Occupational Health and Safety now have control of the investigation into the cause of the explosion, which has not been determined at this time.

Next of kin have been notified but the name of the deceased man will not be released.

RCMP expect to have more details on Friday, November 4th.

Emergency response exercise happening Wednesday

Some City facilities will be busier than normal when The City practices its emergency plans as part of an annual emergency response exercise on Wednesday, December 11, 2019.

City Hall and the Collicutt Centre will be used as part of the exercise with City Hall serving as the Emergency Operations Centre, and the Collicutt Centre as a mock reception site. It is business as usual for both facilities with all regular facility programs and services happening as scheduled; however, citizens may see City staff and emergency personnel, vehicles and equipment participating in the training scenario.

“We are always practicing and refining our emergency plans and processes to ensure we are prepared for potential emergency situations,” said Karen Mann, Emergency Management Coordinator. “Annual large-scale exercises, like the one on Wednesday, allow our teams to train together, identify areas for improvement and build on existing skills.”

The exercise will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with various staff participating in different ways throughout the day.

Fair Deal Panel town hall set for Red Deer

Alberta’s Fair Deal Panel will hold its second open town hall meeting in Red Deer on Dec. 9.

The Fair Deal Panel is consulting Albertans on how best to define and secure a fair deal for the province. They’re exploring ideas that give the province a bigger voice within the federation, increase power over areas of provincial jurisdiction and advance vital economic interests.

The Red Deer town hall will be held on Monday, Dec. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Westerner Park Prairie Pavilion. Seating capacity is limited so participants should register to attend.

Albertans are encouraged to attend local town hall sessions and share their vision of how Alberta can achieve a fairer deal. Additional town hall locations and dates are being confirmed.

All Albertans will have the opportunity to provide their input online and through other forms of direct feedback as the panel conducts its public consultations until Jan. 30, 2020. More information on how to participate is available at www.fairdeal.ca.

In addition to receiving input from Albertans, the Fair Deal Panel will consult with policy experts and undertake research to inform its recommendations. The panel will complete its report to the government by March 31, 2020.
