Basketball Kings 6th in ACAC, Queens Hockey Squad out in ACAC semi, Kings Hockey on a roll, Indoor Track Team wins Grand Prix

The RDC Queens Hockey team put forth a great effort against the MacEwan University Griffins, but dropped their semi-final series in three games.  At the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Basketball Championship, the Kings finished sixth.  The Red Deer College Kings Hockey team defeated the MacEwan University Griffins once and the Briercrest College Clippers twice, completing the regular season. The RDC Indoor Track team placed first overall at Grand Prix #2.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics.

Queens Hockey | Thursday, Feb. 28 | ACAC semi-final | MacEwan University

The Griffins took game one 4-2 on home ice. Jenessa Fournier and Jordyn Burgar scored for the Queens. Karlee Fetch made 39 saves (0.929) for RDC.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, March 2 | ACAC semi-final | Servus Arena

In game two, the Red Deer College Queens defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 2-1 to push the series to three games. Mairead Bast and Sydnee Decorby had the RDC goals. Decorby recorded the overtime winner.

Karlee Fetch stopped 34 out of 35 shots (0.971) and was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game.

In lieu of game tickets, $655.50 was raised for the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre (CASASC).

Queens Hockey | Sunday, March 3 | ACAC semi-final | MacEwan University

In a hard fought battle, the Griffins captured game three 3-1 to advance to the finals against NAIT. Mairead Bast scored the lone goal for the Queens. Once again, Karlee Fetch was excellent in net, turning aside 35 out of 37 shots (0.946).

Kings Basketball | Feb. 28 to March 2 | ACAC Championship | Lakeland College

The RDC Kings finished sixth at the ACAC Championship. On Thursday, the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings picked up an 85-75 decision over the Kings. The Red Deer College Kings defeated the Ambrose University Lions 93-84 on Friday and then dropped a 78-69 score to the host Lakeland College Rustlers on Saturday afternoon. Spencer Klassen was named to the ACAC Men’s Basketball Second All-Star Team.

Kings Hockey | Wednesday, Feb. 27 | MacEwan University

The RDC Kings soundly defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 6-2. Tyler Podgorenko, Austin Hunter, Chase Thudium, Mathieu Lapointe, Ryley Smith and Dylan Thudium scored for RDC. Arik Weersink made 36 saves for the win (0.947).

Kings Hockey | Friday, March 1 | Briercrest College

The RDC Kings controlled the Briercrest College Clippers 7-1 in Saskatchewan. Lynnden Pastachak, Dylan Thudium, Chance Longjohn, Ryley Smith, Chase Thudium, Parker Smyth and Mike Statchuk recorded goals. Troy Trombley turned aside 25 out of 26 shots (0.962) for the victory in net.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, March 2 | Briercrest College

The RDC Kings trailed by two goals heading into the third period, but they persisted and defeated the Clippers 4-3. Mathieu Lapointe, Ryley Smith, Jacob Wozney and Lynnden Pastachak scored for RDC. Arik Weersink made 18 saves in goal, in the final regular season contest.

The Kings (19-7-1-1) finished even with the MacEwan University Griffins (19-7-1-1) in the standings, but the Griffins had the edge in head-to-head competition during the regular season. The Red Deer College Kings finished third and will face the Concordia University Thunder (7-19-1-1) in the best of three quarter-final. The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (17-10-1-0) will compete against the SAIT Trojans (17-10-1-0) in the other quarter-final. First place NAIT (20-7-0-1) and MacEwan will receive a bye.

Indoor Track | Saturday, March 2 | Grand Prix #2 | Concordia University of Edmonton

The RDC Indoor Track team captured first place, using the women’s and men’s combined scores. The Queens were excellent, placing first among the female teams. Shayla Sklaruk earned first in the 300 m (42.65) and 600 m (1:41.24). In her first ACAC Indoor Track competition, Sandra Garcia- Bernal (5:06.22), who’s an energetic member of Queens Basketball, placed first over 1,500 m.

The Kings had several strong races. Stephen Rowley (2:08.68) finished third in the men’s 800 m final. Matt Hope (4:06.44) raced to third in the 1,500 m and Devin Saunders (9:28.99) was third over 3,000 m.

End of an era for Red Deer Minor baseball Braves

Following many discussions within the Red Deer community, the baseball community, our association members, as well as our board of directors we have made the decision to move forward with rebranding our teams, currently known as the Braves. For our association the Braves name symbolized warrior strength, bravery and resilience, all qualities we were proud to align with; and although the initial moniker of our teams was never intended to carry a derogatory or disrespectful connotation, for some, it has. The topic of our rebrand has been polarizing and arguments both for and against have been passionately presented. We have made the decision to move forward in the direction we feel is best for our association.

In alignment with the membership majority vote, the Red Deer Minor Baseball Board of Directors is excited to announce that we will now be known as the Red Deer Rangers.

The Red Deer Rangers will retain our current navy and crimson colors and will not adopt the colors or logo of the MLB, NHL, or any other Rangers franchise. We are looking forward to forging our own identity and embracing our own look.

As you can appreciate this is a complex initiative that will take time. We will remain the Braves for the 2024 season and aim to have our rebrand complete for the 2025 season.

All participants that submitted the Rangers name during our rebranding poll, will be entered into a draw to receive the first Red Deer Rangers jersey.

We hope you will join us in celebrating this positive endeavor as we create a new inclusive legacy for our association that all can be proud of.

Red Deer Minor Hockey is proud to announce our new General Manager Lane Moore

The Red Deer Minor Hockey Board of Directors is pleased & honored to announce, after an extensive search, that Lane Moore has accepted the position of General Manager of Red Deer Minor Hockey.  Lane will start his new role early in the new year & is very excited about leading our organization into the future as we aim to provide a positive learning and maturing experience for all of our young athletes & coaches in a minor hockey setting.

Lane comes into the role of General Manager with an extensive resume, in both hockey and administration.  Lane has led the Bentley school as principal for the last 17 years & was an educator prior to that.  On the hockey side, Lane’s passion for coaching & engaging with young athletes, dates back to 2002.  His most recent involvement as a coach with Red Deer Minor Hockey saw Lane lead the U17AAA North Star Chiefs for 2 seasons (21-22, 22-23).  Prior to his work with Red Deer Minor Hockey Lane served as President of Rimbey Minor Hockey for several seasons.

One of Lane’s biggest strengths is his ability to create highly effective teams by building a common mission & vision & then executing on those through visionary leadership.  These attributes shone through during this General Manager search and we are thrilled for Lane to lead this organization now & into the future as we aim to be one of the premier Minor Hockey Associations in the province.

Lane, his wife Kathleen & their three children Easton, Cooper & Lexi call Red Deer home.  His son Cooper is the captain of Red Deer U18AAA Optimist Chiefs & his older son Easton is pursuing his hockey career and post-secondary studies in Massachusetts.  Please join us in congratulating Lane Moore as the new General Manager of the Red Deer Minor Hockey Commission, welcome Lane!
